Resources: For Animals
Favorite Sayings:
- Lots of people talk to animals.... Not very many listen, though.... That's the problem. (Benjamin Hoff, The Tao of Pooh)
- I have been studying the traits and dispositions of the "lower animals" (so called) and contrasting them with the traits and dispositions of man. I find the result humiliating to me. (Mark Twain, Letters from the Earth, 1907)
- If all the beasts were gone, men would die from a great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beasts also happens to the man. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons of the Earth. (Chief Seattle of the Suwamish Tribe, letter to President Franklin Pierce)
- To insult someone we call him "bestial." For deliberate cruelty and nature, "human" might be the greater insult. (Isaac Asimov, Isaac Asimov's Book of Science and Nature Quotations, 1988)
- You can tell much about a culture by observing the way it treats it's animals. (Gandhi)
Animal Care and Support Web Sites
- My all time favorite that I check first is Little Big Cat by Jean Hofve, DVM. Dr. Hofve's site has a free e-mail newsletter plus a wealth of free articles providing excellent recommendations for a broad range of feline health and behavior problems. Titles of a few of the free articles are: Easy Homemade Diets for Cats and Dogs, Kidney Disease in Older Cats, Litter box Secrets, Cat-to-Dog Introductions, Selecting a Good Commercial Pet Food, Indoors or Outdoors?, Hair balls, and MANY MORE!!! Although this primarily is a cat web site, several of her articles address dog issues as well.
- To find a Holistic Vet in your area: Search AHVMA (American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association) web site
- Green Hope Farm Flower Essences: I use essences from the 'Animal Wellness Collection' of Green Hope Flower Essences for my cats and dogs. Note that Flower Essences are very different than Essential Oils, which can often be too harsh or chemically detrimental for many animals.
You can read more about the difference between Flower Essences and Essential Oils on my web site at my
Aromatherapy, Essential Oils, and Flower Essences link.
- Aunt Jeni's Home Made for Life cat and dog food. After diligent researching about cat diets, then making my own cat food at home for a while, this is what my cats eat today.
- From the professionals below also see Dr. Charles Loops (dog and cat diet and vaccination recommendations) and Dr. Christine King (horse care) for resource information.
Animal Professionals I recommend
Note that all of these resources can work with you over the telephone wherever you and your animal companion reside.
- Mind-Body Consulting for Cats: Little Big Cat. Jean Hofve, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Jackson Galaxy, Cat Behavior Consultant
- Homeopathy: Charles Loops, DVM. Dr. Loops does most of his practice over the telephone and sends you prescribed homeopathic remedies in the mail.
- Holistic Veterinary Practice, Animal Medical Intuition: Cristine King, DVM. Although Dr. King specializes in horses, she also works with cats and dogs. Along with being a skilled veterinarian, Dr. King is a gifted Intuitive. Dr. King is my TOP CHOICE of all the animal professionals that I have worked with!!!
Animal Communicators I recommend:
Books To Support Your Four-Legged Friends
- Homeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs
by Dr. Don Hamilton, DVM. The first 70 pages of this book are an exquisite description (one of the best I have seen) of how disease starts and progresses in the body. Dr. Hamilton provides fascinating perspectives that many of the illnesses of our cats and dogs today are simply the result of over vaccination and commercial pet food.
- The New Natural Cat: A Complete Guide for Finicky Owners
by Anitra Frazier.
This book has fabulous information on caring for cats. She gives exquisite explanations of what to do, how to it, problems you might have doing it, etc. She includes helpful diagrams as well. Recently one of my kitty clients would not eat and all - including his 2 veterinarians who thought he was at death's door. I made the high protein chicken broth described in this book, and the dear kitty has pulled through and is getting stronger and stronger every day! This book was also a godsend that saved my precious Victoria kitty when she was horribly ill. Whenever I have a problem with any kitties in my life, this is one of the first books I pull from my shelf. Recipes for non-commercial diets are included. I highly recommend this book to all my cat clients.
- Dr. Pritcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats
by Richard H. Pitcairn and Susan Hubble Pitcairn. Recipes for non-commercial diets are included.
- Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats: The Ultimate Diet
by Kymythy R. Schultze, CCN, AHI (with forwards by Louise L. Hay, Dr. Bruce W. Cauble, DVM, and Dr. Stephen R. Blake, DVM). Small book with recipes.
- The Nature of Animal Healing : The Definitive Holistic Medicine Guide to Caring for Your Dog and Cat
by Dr. Martin Goldstein, DVM.
- My current all time favorite:
The Veterinarians' Guide to Natural Remedies for Cats
by Martin Zucker (forward by Dr. Carvel Tiekert, DVM).
Martin Zucker has compiled recommendations from over 30 veterinarians on how they holistically treat things like arthritis, bad breath, cancer, dental health, diabetes, digestive disorders, eye problems, hair balls, kidney failure, obesity, skin disorders and much much more! The dog version of this book is: The Veterinarians' Guide to Natural Remedies for Dogs .
- Animal books focused on Chinese Medicine, Acupressure and animal meridians include:
- Four Paws Five Directions: A Guide to Chinese Medicine for Cats and Dogs by Cheryl Schwartz, DVM. This is a great resource providing acupressure point treatment information as well as dietary, herbal and nutritional supplements by illness. This book contains a great index which includes symptoms.
- Well organized species specific books focused exclusively on acupressure (I love these books but wish they had included an index):
- Carol Komitor, the Healing Touch for AnimalsTM founder, has a great list of recommended reading on her web site: Healing Touch for AnimalsTM
Interesting Animal Resources
- Wonderful article from National Geographic about how remarkable and intelligent animals are: Animal Minds.
- This one had me crying - in a good way - not a sad way: Smartest land animal video. The dexterity and thought behind this video flabbergast me. And to think so many are killed for their ivory alone is heart breaking.
- PRECIOUS video of a fawn and a kitten with Louis Armstrong singing: What A Wonderful World.
