What is EFT?

Psychological Acupressure Therapy or "Energy Psychology" is a fascinating field of study that has exploded in the last decade. Energy Psychology interventions combine mind and body to release psychological blocks (emotions). As an added bonus, when physiological blocks are releases, physical symptoms are also often released. These interventions use the body's energy system, while focusing on the particular emotion, feeling or problem for this release. One of the many Energy Psychology modalities is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) which was founded by Gary Craig. EFT uses tapping with your fingers on the body's meridians (the same meridians that are used in acupuncture) for releasing both emotional and physical problems.

I know this seems too good to be true. I have personally seen miracles with clients and friends who learn and use this fabulous tool. In my mind, EFT is the owner's manual we all wish we were given at birth!

Where did EFT Come From?

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) is an Energy Psychology modality developed by Dr. Roger Callahan. An early student of Dr. Callahan's, Stanford Engineer Gary Craig, took many of the TFT concepts and found ways to improve and simplify the process. Gary created a method that is simple to learn and simple for anybody to use. I personally think that Gary deserves some sort of world wide honor for creating such a straight forward yet tremendously powerful technique and making it so easily available to the planet. After many years of supporting EFT's world wide growth Gary retired in 2010.

Can I learn to use EFT myself?

The founder of EFT, Gary Craig, wants as many people to have access to EFT as possible. Gary's original detailed EFT Manual is now available as a paperback book. Much of Gary's rich web site was archived onto The EFT Universe web site. The EFT Universe web site has a FREE quick start EFT manual that you can download from EFT Quick Start Manual. Gary's excellent tutorial as well as his Frequently Asked Questions were copied to the EFT Universe web site. For many problems that you would like to resolve, this is all that you need to get started. For more difficult issues, hiring a skilled EFT Practitioner may be needed to help you identify and eliminate your "core issues". On the original EFT web site it stated that using EFT is usually 80% effective. What I have found through time is that the more experience I have in using EFT, the greater my success rate. When EFT is not working it is because there is some nuance that I am not seeing, not because EFT itself is not working. I believe that this 80% number is low. From my experience it is closer to 98% effective.

When do I use Flo's EFT services?

I use EFT extensively in my practice. EFT is fantastic with coaching clients for releasing blocks which are keeping them from achieving their goals. I often teach EFT to my Healing Touch clients as a tool for pain and symptom relief. I also have clients who only want EFT. My typical EFT-only clients fall into several categories:
  • Let's do EFT! These clients usually hire me for releasing specific problem area/s in their life. We do one or more EFT sessions to neutralize there core issue/s which resolves the problem area/s. During these sessions clients are tapping on themselves.
  • Get me jump started: For some folks, the volume EFT material on the web site can be overwhelming. I get them jump started using EFT by providing one on one EFT session/s. I also provide pointers on how to get started and make use of the materials on the EFT web site.
  • I just need a little help: I have already taught myself EFT. I want to do this myself. I am stuck and am not making progress on a particular issue. I can help you identify your core belief/s and you can do the tapping on your own.
Of special note: If you are using EFT and you are not getting relief, there may be something that you have not tried that would get EFT to work. Just like with anything, the longer you work on a skill (in this case learning and then mastering EFT) the better you become at doing that skill. Common reasons for EFT seemingly not to work are included in the tutorial, frequently asked questions, training videos, classes and experience. Keep trying. Don't blame EFT for not working. Think about what you have not tried. If you are blocked then it is natural for you not to be able to see your own stuff. Sometimes getting a trained EFT Practitioner will help you identify and release your core issue/s.

What should I expect during an EFT session?

I normally do EFT sessions on the telephone. Before our session, I ask that you download and browse the EFT Quick Start Manual. I have an EFT reference file with the tapping points and a few instructions that I ask folks to use as a reference when I teach them EFT. I can e-mail, fax, or mail you this "cheat sheet" prior to our first EFT session. I ask that you have a headset or be on a speaker phone during our EFT session so that your hands are free to tap on yourself during out session. My EFT sessions usually last an hour, and I always recommend that you do EFT tapping between our sessions. My goal with all my clients, whether they be EFT, Coaching, or Healing Touch clients, is to teach you tools and techniques that you can use to stay balanced and healthy. My goal is to always be able to take on new clients, because my "old" clients are healthy, happy and self-sufficient with life tools and habits that work for them!

Where can I get more information?

Interesting web sites: Using EFT for Animals:

While EFT has produced remarkable clinical results, it must still be considered to be experimental. Thus the public must take complete responsibility for their use of EFT. Florence Gans is not a licensed health professional. Florence offers EFT as a licensed "Art of Healing" provider and as an experienced Life Coach. If you want to discuss the use of EFT for a specific emotional problem with a professional in the mental health field, you will be referred to one of a number of licensed practitioners who use EFT in their practices.
